1. Full-grain over bonded leather
Full-grain leather keeps the natural surface of the hide, so it ages into a rich patina instead of peeling. Bonded leather is scrap glued together and rarely survives daily use.
2. Check the stitching
Tight, even stitches with no loose threads signal careful construction. Reinforced stress points — handles, base corners — are where cheaper bags fail first.
3. Hardware matters
Solid brass or stainless zips and clasps outlast plated alloys that flake. Give every zip a few test pulls; it should glide, not catch.
